その結果、スピッカーのスティグマに関する見解からスティグマは不名誉な徴であり恥辱の感受や差別的経験、人間的尊厳の喪失、憐憫の対象であり、それによってスティグマを負う人々は力を失っていく経験をしていた。そしてスティグマを負う人々は自分自身のモラルキャリアから生じるスティグマの問題と、構造化された社会関係から生じるスティグマの問題の双方に影響され社会的位置や環境が規定されていた。
