Furthermore， we aimed to use this information in the nursing of DM patients and to provide guidance for young nurses. The following five themes emerged out of this qualitative descriptive research: the challenges faced by DM patients and the importance of observation; the self-determination of patients with DM and difficulties associated with their care; sympathy and compassion in terminal care; the possibility of building relationships through long-term involvement with patients with DM; and facing challenges and the desire to grow as nurses.
