Questionnaires were distributed to suitable subjects during their hospitalization in the maternity wards at 5 institutions in Northern Hokkaido that had agreed to cooperate with this study and a total of 198 completed questionnaires were collected anonymously from mothers when they returned for their babies' 1-month check-ups. Questionnaire items covered three main categories : awareness of the syndrome itself, knowledge of the Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare's\"SIDS Awareness Month\" campaign, and personal information about the respondent. Results were totaled and tabulated, suggesting that, although the term\"SIDS\"itself is widely known, knowledge of all 3 risk factors for SIDS - sleeping in a prone position [75.8%], smoking during pregnancy [71.7%], and non-breastfeeding [26.8%] - remains inadequate.
